Lent Booklist

Someone over on facebook asked me to make a suggestion for something to read during Lent.

I thought I’d done that before on the blog and was planing simply to link back to it but I can’t find it, so here’s a new Lent Book List.

Worship-shaped Life (Canterbury Studies in Anglicanism) is well worth a go. One of the best collections of essays about liturgy I’ve been sent to review this year.

The Orthodox Heretic: And Other Impossible Tales is a collection of clever new parables

Vision Upon Vision: Processes of Change and Renewal in Christian Worship is an excellent book looking at liturgical change.

I discovered The Human Face of Church: A Social Psychology and Pastoral Theology Resource for Pioneer and Traditional Ministry whilst on a clergy conference last year and have found it a helpful way to think about how we relate in churches.

I think I came late to Alan de Botton’s book The Consolations of Philosophy but I enjoyed it once I did.

Easter by Michael Arditti is an obvious book to read during Lent. Its flawed and far too long and far too good. Don’t miss the more recent The Enemy of the Goodby the same author.

Quarantine is another obvious book for Lent. Strange and odd and not a book I enjoyed but was glad of having read.

The other thing to consider for Lent devotions is the Daily Green Lent email’s that we’re sending out thanks to the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney. If you are outside St Mary’s, you should perhaps sign up via the Aberdeen Diocesan website and get them from them. If you are round here, let me know and I’ll sign you up for the local ones. You get a daily devotional email for each of the 40 days of Lent – a brief reflection and something to pray about. My thanks go to the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney for making this available to the wider church – its an excellent idea.
