Bishop Watch

I see that Richard Holloway has railed against Mel Gibson's film. http://news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=281832004

I've no intention of going to see the film myself and for that reason, am a little wary of condemning it outright. It seems to me to be rather ghoulish to go and see such violence o­n film. I don't believe that it was the violence handed out to Jesus which saved anything or anyone.Meanwhile across in the East, the Flagship Diocese – Brechin is soon to lose its Captain. Bishop Neville has announced his impending retirement:

I am sure that bishops announcing their retirements a year in advance is supposed to help us all to plan for the future, but it seems to me that it is helping no-one. I rather like the US system of electing a new bishop before the other o­ne has departed.

    I think I would have to agree with you both there. I don’t believe the story of the Passion should be made into a blockbuster type film in any case, certainly not a sensationalised film. On the other hand I do think sometimes we are too slow to acknowledge the hideous events of Good Friday and what it means to Christianity. We shouldn’t be too rosy in our view but we shouldn’t portray violence for violence sake.
    That’s probably just a longwinded way of saying ‘yes I agree’!
