Learning to look

I’m starting a new blog tonight. Just before Christmas I bought myself a new camera and the idea is to post photos regularly to ensure that I’m committed to using the camera. I used to be quite good at taking pictures, but went off it when I got my first digital camera. Somehow the resolution just was not good enough. Anyway, the pictures on the new blog, subtitled “Learning How to Look” will start to appear just after midnight tonight at http://photoblog.thurible.net

What I cannot work out is why this url does not work when you put www in front of it. If anyone knows, please tell me.

    Sub domains

    I think it simply is the way that your host (and most web hosts) have set up their server.  I assume that it’s an Apache server running under Linux.  In which case they will simply be controlling the sub domains via the httpd.conf file for your account.  This allows you to specify different VirtualHosts in the format:

    ServerName http://www.domain.com
    DocumentRoot /home/httpd/htdocs/

    ServerName subdomain.domain.com
    DocumentRoot /home/httpd/htdocs/subdomain/

    etc.

    I suspect then that your host could also set up the server to point all URLs prefixed with a www to point to the same directory as subdomain.domain.com (ie http://www.subdomain.domain.com points to the subdomain.domain.com) but you’d have to ask them.

    I’ve just tried to create a http://www.subdomain subdomain on my server, but it didn’t work.  I’m sure that someone with 1337 skills in server admin could explain why, but I suspect it’s because the various labels (the bits separated by dots) point to different levels of the domain.

    Why do you want the leading www anyway? I like that I have blog.garethjmsaunders.co.uk.
