Buying a TV

I've just bought a television. I've lived for about 5 years without one, but have decided that the time had come to try having it in the house again. I'm going to be off work this week following a minor operation I'm having on my mouth on Tuesday. The TV is supposed to help. I wonder whether it will be a permanent fixture. For reasons that are two complicated to go into, I've had a licence for months, but not a TV itself. I don't really understand it yet. All the pictures move, which is clever, but it does all seem relentless and frantic somehow.
My mother was taught maths by John Logie Baird's daughter, if I recall correctly.
