Anna Lindh

I feel sorry for the Swedes, mourning their foreign minister. She was killed in an attack in a deparment store which I shopped in when I was studying in Sweden 6 years ago. It is the kind of thing that the Swedes themselves will mull over and grieve over for many months. It is yet another confirmation that they live in a country with the same troubles as anywhere else. It is more than a young politician that they have lost. Swedes like to believe that they live in a different kind of place, where troubles seldom happen, yet this is the second politian to be violently killed on the streets of Stockholm in modern times. The Swedish people's dreams and hopes will have been killed this week.
