A good meeting of the Book Club last night, discussing Iris Murdoch's The Bell. I am not sure that we ever decided what the Bell itself represented, if anything, but the conversation along the way was interesting. I was the only man there, as usual. Do men read fiction?
Part of the discussion became focussed on what the churches have to offer society. There seemed to be a general consensus that whatever we had that was good, it was being marketed or promoted terribly badly. I agree. A failure of nerve and episcope in a time when spirituality has never been more desired. Well, perhaps that is an exageration. Perhaps in centuries past, people wanted a spirituality which would rescue them from the surrounding culture. I think that both Christians and non-Christians are now looking at spiritualities which are embedded in our cultures. Plural in both cases, of course.
