World Record Evensong

Turnout last night at Evensong was thought to be a world record around here for modern times. There were 119 people present, though 5 did leave when they discovered there was no sermon. My hunch is that they were looking for St Silas Church and were perplexed by the exquisite offering of music by Purcell, complete with string quartet and a very pretty borrowed kist of whistles.

Evensong is proving so popular that we have decided to keep going with a musical service each week through the summer. This is a departure from previous practise when there has just been a said service during choir holidays. More details and a programme to follow.

There was indeed a “vast” crowd in the Cathedral (if not in the pub afterwards!) but are you intending cancelling the choir holiday this year (is it April 1st already), or is there a plan so cunning you could pin a tail on it etc etc? 🙂

At least the Summer Evensongs will not be punctuated with a member of the congregation falling through the Creche toy storage boxes at the beginning of the Psalm, when sitting on the cushioned tops.
