Saddam Verdict etc

I don’t suppose that it will surprise anyone that I’m against the death sentence in general. In the particular case of Saddam Hussein, I wouldn’t have thought that executing him would help Iraq much even if I were in favour. A further upsurge in violence is not going to help anyone wherever it comes from.

I’ve no doubt that execution would be favoured by many.

As it happens, the last person to be executed in public in Glasgow belonged to the congregation in which I currently now work. The murder story and trial makes for rather a good read if you like that sort of thing. (To be honest, I don’t). But his fate on Glasgow Green in front of a large jeering crowd, and with a St Mary’s curate standing by was simply grisly, barbarous and horrific.
