St Luke’s Day

Today is St Luke’s day – a good day for choosing a husband, apparently.

I’ve done the research on this. If no husband appears during the day and you are wondering who it will be, then you need to get your act together before nightfall.

You need to gather powder of dried marigold flowers, marjoram, thyme and wormwood. Then you simmer them in virgin honey and white vinegar before smearing on stomach, breast and lips tonight. Then recite three times:

St Luke, St Luke, be kind to me
In dreams let me my true love see.

Then you get to dream about your true love! Apparently if True Love smiles in the dream then all will be well in the relationship. If TL frowns or is nasty, then life is not going to be a bed of roses.

It does seem to me that bedtime tonight is going to be rather sticky, but you can’t beat the Christian liturgy, can you?

Comments

  1. Is it wrong to want to use your last sentence, plucked from context, as one’s new email sig? 😉

  2. It would be a sin, Ryan. A sin.

  3. Bah humbug ;-)! Shall stick to the Auden (good company, surely?)

  4. agatha says

The rhyme seems to refer to “true love” not husband. The two aren’t necessarily the same thing!
