• Statement on the Christchurch Terror Attacks Against Muslims

Glasgow in Scotland and Christchurch in New Zealand are linked by the fact that each contains a cathedral built to an identical design.

Christ Church Cathedral and St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow were built to identical plans.

Christian hearts and Muslim hearts are made to the same design as one another. Today we weep for all those who are victims of terror and intimidation.

Sadly, we are joined together in being broken-hearted at the news of the callous attacks against Muslim communities in Christ Church.

Christians follow teachings which encourage them to welcome strangers. There is no anti-immigrant rhetoric that can be called Christian.

Any attack on people at worship diminishes us all.
Any attack on people at worship is an attack on civilization.
Any attack on people because they are of the Muslim faith is utterly wrong.

My love and prayers go to the Muslim communities directly affected by this tragedy and to our own Muslim friends in Glasgow.

There is only one God and the God whom we all worship has compassion on all who mourn.

With out looking at a map I can think of three:

    Belfast;
The Cathedral of The Isles, Millport; and
    Carlisle.

I am not sure if there are others, the next two which are probably further than Glasgow are Newcastle and St Mary’s Edinburgh

No, I don’t think so, Stewart. Partly right and partly wrong.

    Greetings from Cowal & Bute.

Carlisle Cathedral must be closest to Castle Douglas.

I suspect that St German in Peel, diocese of Sodor & Man, is next closest as the seagull flies – the radio reception from the Isle of Man is extraordinarily clear down there.

Cathedral of the Isles on Great Cumbrae and Glasgow – pretty similar I would have thought, Calmac notwithstanding. Your poor horse would need waterwings to get over there, and your gaiters would have to fully waterproof.

I’ve travelled from the Isle of Man to Kirkcudbright, but in a yacht. Without the horse.

As the crow flies, I suspect that both Newcastle and Durham are closer than Glasgow. Of course, in practical terms, the Irish Sea does rather get in the way. Having spent four weeks living somewhere that is not quite so far south as Castle Douglas and yet still does not get BBC Radio Scotland, this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

St Mary’s is closer than the Cathedral of the Isles, but only by about a mile and a half.

  • Was Jesus nice to women?

I’ve been thinking about that gospel reading that we had on Sunday all week. Here at St Mary’s I read the central part of the reading, the dialogue with the woman at the well as a dialogue between my voice and that of a female member of the congregation. You learn new things by the…

  • Sermon – At the Well

Here’s this morning’s sermon. I went a little off piste from the text, but essentially what I wanted to say is in both the video and the words below. Let me begin this morning with a poem. Just a short poem – so slight that you need to listen or it will pass you by.…

  • Who is the happiest of the them all?

Mirror, mirror, on the wall…. Who is the happiest of them all? Turns out the answer is clergy. According to the BBC, the government is beginning to include measures of happiness in what it attempts to do and part of that has been trying to quantify who the happiest people are in society. Turns out…

  • St Augustine

I saw this painting recently in London. It purports to be St Monica being handed her newly born son who was to become Augustine of Hippo. It seems to me that this painting explains much.
