• The Forum: Frikki Walker

Last Sunday the speaker at our Forum meeting was Frikki Walker, St Mary’s Director of Music.

His forum was a tour de force and kept the audience entranced as he educated, opined and inspired us. Together we talked about favourite music, the composer he would most like to be locked into a church with, what makes a musician and what makes music at St Mary’s so special.

We thought about what matters most, the music or the words. And we had a go a the question that was raised in a forum a few weeks ago as to whether it matters whether a church musician believes.

    Take a look.

Fr Kelvin, is there a link to a pdf of the order of service so we can all see it?

I’ll try to post a pdf later today. I need to pick it up from the office and then bring it home to change it to pdf format. I also need to correct a couple of mistakes before I forget what they were.

I can’t post everything that was in the people’s hands for copyright reasons, but I’ll see what I can include.

In the service sheet, verse 3 of In the Bleak Midwinter has the wrong words.

The words as used by Harold Darke, and as sung as a tenor solo last night, from memory are:

Enough for Him whom Cherubim worship night and day,
A breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay,
Enough for Him, whom angels fall down before,
the ox and ass and camel which adore

OK, I shall remove my anorak now!

Once upon a time, before people had access to the internet on every desktop, I remember being invited to protest about an outrageous blasphemy. (I was 8, I think). Someone had released a musical film whose contents were offensive to God’s own true believers. We needed to rally. Even the title of this cinematic travesty…

To Glasgow yesterday evening for a night at the theatre to see Jerry Springer – the Opera. Along with a member of the staff of the General Synod Office, I braved the howling mob of folk outside who were kindly waiting to sing hymns and bellow at us. I joined in the hymn singing as we…

I am not going to give a pill by pill commentary on each of the 20 pink pills that the Vet has entertainingly suggested I put into the cat. However, Pill 5 was a good one.Madam likes hard, crunchy cheesy cat treats which she sometimes gets from my mother for Christmas. They are very smelly.…

When I was in Sunday School, I remember singing a little song which went like this: When you see a rainbow, remember, God is love. When you see a rainbow, remember, God is love. And the truth is, I’ve found it hard ever since to look at a rainbow without that going through my head.…
