• What’s on your church website right now?

Just a gentle reminder that people are looking for church services and Christmas events to go to right now. (Yes, right this minute. Today. Really.) It is worth asking what they will find if they go to your church website.

One of the things that astonished me last Christmas was hearing people at St Mary’s saying that they had come to us because their local churches were not having any Christmas events or services.

“Oh yes they are!” I replied in true panto style.

“Oh no they’re not!” they replied, “we’ve looked, there’s nothing on their websites”.

The time in the year when people are most eager to try out a new church and most welcome invitations to church seems to be around Christmas. Can I suggest that everyone reading this take a look at their own local church website and if they don’t find the details of the Christmas services prominently displayed, get hold of whoever does their website and very gently and lovingly and with every ounce of Christian compassion you can muster, bend their ear.

That includes those responsible for diocesan websites which give a page to each of their churches. Remember, if those pages are there, google may well find them first. If people find webpages which list churches where the latest news is any older than last month (never mind last year) and where the words “No events at present” are shown in the week before Christmas, it might be said that you can’t really blame them for not turning up.

Times of Christmas services at St Mary’s can be found here. Note that they don’t follow the same pattern as last year. We’re living on the edge, we are.

    Right on the edge.

Ooh, you’re in some illustrious company – there are worse places to be than beneath John Barrowman!

    Congratulations ๐Ÿ™‚

He and I are almost the same age, Ryan. It is why we look so alike.

Made more impressive by the fact that the praepostorial look is presumably, unlike Mr Barrowman’s, all-natural ๐Ÿ˜‰

          Mostly natural.

Yes, I’d quite like to be under … sorry, got lost in thought there. Well done, Kelvin, and yes, more church people, please. As long as they spell your name right, that is all that maters ….

I don’t think the paper got it wrong at all. St Mary’s is Glasgow’s Cathedral (that is if we ignore the chapel by the Clyde). The C of S place was a cathedral but not any more – it hasn’t had a cathedra for hundreds of years and so is merely a parish church now (nothing wrong with that). The C of E has done away with provosts (they were the head of the cathedrals which also functioned as parish churches). The boss priest in all the
C of E cathedrals is now called the Dean. And so it should be in SEC because the title ‘provost’ is the designation accorded to the head of toon cooncils.
Yes I know we have deans in the SEC dioceses but they could be retitled as archdeacons which is what (I think) is their function.

As to the pink list…how times have changed….. years ago it would have been called the black list! (sorry!)

Times have indeed changed, Ross. Something which is to be celebrated.

I’ve no desire to be a Dean. Deans in Scotland do something quite different to what I do, and Provost described me nicely. The title of Dean is also used in secular life now too, in education, as is the term Rector.

There are four cathedrals in Glasgow. St Mungo’s, St Luke’s, St Andrew’s and St Mary’s, each no doubt dearly loved by their people.

Archdeacon is a great title tho, suggesting to the layperson that it involves deacons raising one eyebrow and making drily witty comments.

I’d’a thunk you might have been a ‘national treasure’ by now…maybe next year. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a National Treasure round about this blog. That’ll do for now.

I seem to recall that at Coates Hall back in the very early 1970s the student charged with providing services at the Mission Church in Dean Village was known [tongue very firmly in cheek] as the Archdeacon of the Water of Leith. A resounding title but no gaiters came with it.

  • Big Sing – Friday Night in Dundee

There is a big sing in Dundee tomorrow night in St Paul’s Cathedral, at 7.30 pm. There is at least one car going from Bridge of Allan. It is for anyone who would enjoy an evening of singing in church, not just choir people. Some of the material will be suitable for Advent and Christmas.…

  • St Andrew's Day

Why not make St Andrew’s Day a holiday in Scotland? I’m doing my bit today with a folk mass at church tonight at 1930. I think that I would prefer it if St Columba was the patron of Scotland, but I don’t suppose that is going to change now.

This morning’s little discovery is that you can sing Abide With Me to the first half of the tune Highland Cathedral. I am trying to decide whether this is a good thing.
