• Postcard to Rowan

Dear Rowan, wondered whether it had occurred to you that if you give an interview in one country, these days, it will probably be picked up in another country.

Take this interview that you’ve given to the Telegraph this weekend. Did you have any regrets? Oh yes, not going to the USA to deal with the gay bishop thing sooner… etc

Now, just a quick PR thought here. It might be a good idea to stop and think about what those comments might have sounded like on the other side of the pond. before making them. US Episcopalians are hardly going to take kindly to the idea that you could have come over and sorted them out sooner now, are they? Apart from anything else, so many of them thought they did the right thing in consecrating +Gene Robinson and even more of them thought they were entitled under their polity to make that decision, whether it was the right one or not.

Dear, dear Rowan. You’ve made lots of statements like this in your time as Archbishop of Canterbury. They bewilder people because folk think you are wise and yet it looks so gauche.

Please stop. Even in these last days.

Enough already, as they say in some places.

    KELVIN

I note your reference to “in straight lines ” when you were at Bearsden PS.
Were you not taught about tautologies in these former days, when education would have been more content based than you would have found on your recent visit?

Ah yes, the staffroom etiquette. I’ve done the cup thing, the chair thing, and, possibly worst faux-pas of all, the crossword thing in my time. Nowadays there are no staff rooms, just bases, a whole new minefield of unwelcoming stares.

Sorry to hear about the torrid time in P7 you had with the belting teacher…as a teacher myself, I’m not in favour of such tactics. I find a cold silent stare always used to work better than any cane or belt…such activities should be reserved for consenting adults only ;-/

      Thanks Jaye.

The same teacher spent a quarter of each day on religious instruction and was, as I said, quite mad.

One one occasion I was belted for humming. On another, simply, I suspect for being me.

There are probably those reading this who have some sympathy with her.

I realised today that we have made some steps forward in the congregation. In a conversation with some of the musicians, the question was not whether we were going to have a special sung setting for Easter, but which one we would have, and whether or not we would have an orchestra.I also realised in…

Arrived home to find the cat worshipping the washing machine. The machine was almost at the end of its spin cycle. The juddering had cause the cat-food bag, which I had left on the top, to tip up. The dry cat food had emptied itself all over the top of the washing machine and was being vibrated…

  • Arrrgh

Oh dear. I fell over in the street again. “Arrrgh” was the cry as my feet slipped on a thick layer of black ice in the middle of Stirling. It would appear that this came from window cleaners’ water. No bones broken, but a sore back. I was picked up by young people and traffic…
