• What am I listening to?

    Oh, thank you for asking.

Well, the days of listening to CDs seem to be long over, don’t they? I’ve not ditched all the CDs like Chris Pinnock has, but wonder how long I’ll go on with a cupboard full of little boxes.

    • Firstly and most splendidly there’s the Gyndebourne summer online opera festival. Oh yes, you can watch and listen to half a dozen or so glorious Glyndebourne productions. Like all opera should be, they are free at the point of delivery.
    • I briefly got sucked into the gay-country-pap of Steve Grand’s All American Boy the other day until I realised it was just like most representations of gay people in America – doomed to end in tears. (Cheyenne Jackson’s Don’t Wanna Know made me laugh, but it is more of the same – all American gay boys don’t get happy endings to their stories much in America).
    • Then something I saw somewhere reminded me of Alan Price’s O Lucky Man so I had a good listen to that.
    • I also came across Tom Gilfellon’s album In the Middle of the Tune on Spotify – something I’ve not heard since I ditched vinyl – here’s the first track The Banks of Red Roses.
    • Whilst I was getting stuff ready for Pride the other week, I needed some music to cheer me on my way so listened to Holly Near and sang along with Singing for our Lives.
    • Christy Moore’s Before the Deluge doesn’t get tired, does it?
    • Neither does Martin Simpson’s Prodigal Son album.
    • And did you know you can hear Frank Weir’s monumental 20th Century Folk Mass on spotify?ย  It is really a big band mass, but there you do.

Spotify tried to get me to listen to Val Doonican the other day. I’m not letting on as to whether I did or not though.

Having looked at the pcitures and read the blog, there is only one response – WOW!!!!

Looking forward to next year when I hope to be present.

It really was very very good. And you are so right about the ‘easy to over do the gloomy events’ thing – I found myself thinking ‘and when one gets home after an evening service, late, tired, one fasts’ only to realise that no, actually, one feasts!

Glad to have some good pics of the event. It was the the assurance that God was in the midst of it all that was so overpowering – ritual can be a very liberating element, as I’m always rediscovering!

It all seems tickety-boo, Father, except for the fact that you should have used only red rose petals, liberated by the priest from various municipal gardens shortly before dawn on the day of the service, as is traditional. Also, I would have dragged a few urchins in off the street to accompany the priest as he scatters the petals. This is always a crowd pleaser.

Glasgow’s West End is too posh to have urchins… ๐Ÿ˜‰

NB love the monstrance and humeral veil! ๐Ÿ˜€

So disappointed to have missed it. Alas, the wee one was not up for rose petals yesterday evening. I do hope there will be a repeat next year.

    OFF TOPIC –
Padre Kelvin, I shared your post and the link to the glorious photos with Padre Bosco in New Zealand. And was reminded that St Mary’s has a connection. I thought that you may not have heard that Christchurch suffered more serious quakes earlier this week and the cathedral, with many other churches, businesses and homes, suffered much more damage. She lost her Rose window and large sections of walls with this last set of temblors. And although certainly no decisions have been taken, it is looking more like St Mary’s will loose her twin and some other type of building may rise in its place.

Thanks Brother David – I was aware of what’s been happening in Christchurch this week and have been remembering the people from there and specifically from the Cathedral there in my prayers.

Elizabeth, we may just have to go for doing it again and different – but still glorious.

  • To the Kirk

Spent last evening with the Ecumenical Relations Committee of the Glasgow Presbytery. They had asked me along to talk about The Usual Topic. It was a good evening with lots of questions and discussion. The Presbytery had just last week had a vote about whether or not ministers should be free to bless gay couples…

  • Psinging the Psalms

Interlocutor: Provost, where has the thingy gone after the psalm? Me: What thingy? The doxology? Interlocutor: Yes the thingy that goes: “Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.” That thingy. The answer to…

  • The Truth Will Out

It would seem that Bishop David has been away with the Youth of St Andrew’s Diocese. He makes the claim on his blog that he was snapped reading a copy of someone’s copy of Cosmo. Sure enough, a pic claiming to be the same appears on Fr David’s blog today. However…! Digital technology means that…

  • The BA Cross Story

I’ve been fairly hushed about the story of the banning of the cross around the neck of the BA employee. Generally, as I’ve said before, I think that people should be allowed to wear what they like, but does that work in this case? In some ways I don’t think it does. Uniform is uniform.…
