What am I listening to?

soundwaves

Well, thank you for asking. It has been a while.

  • This evening, I’ve been listening to the Damnation of Faust live from the Met in New York on Radio 3. I’m very tempted to give their live Cinema relays a go too. Excellent idea. (And is it the answer to the problem of Argyll and The Isles?)
  • I’ve bought a couple of CDs this week by a group called Arpeggiata. You can hear them on their myspace page if you are so inclined. I bought one CD which is all tunes based on ground basses and another which also features the Kings Singers. Musical prozac both of them. Baroque meets Jazz. Think very posh Penguin Cafe Orchestra. (My thanks to my correspondent in Clare College for posting one of their tunes on Facebook).
  • I’ve been listening to Eddie Reader singing the songs of our bard all week too. My thanks to Mother Ruth for making this possible and also to Father Bishop for sending me in his place a couple of weeks ago to a concert of Ms Reader singing these songs in the Great Hall at Stirling Castle.
  • Top of the most played list on the iPod are Powder Your Face with Sunshine by Doris Day, Are You Strong Enough to Be My Man by Sheryl Crow and Well Did you Evah by Robbie Williams and Jon Lovitz.

What does all that tell you about me?

And what are you listening to anyway?

  2. What am I listening to????

As a recent convert to the iPod owning masses, I have been revisiting my CD collection….

Storm Shadows is part of the Nature Quest series which I bought at the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, Cornwall in 1995.

John Rutter’s Magnificat” which is a good listen and a good sing.

Following the recommendation from , I download the Radio 3 Composer of the Week Podcast on Johann Pachelbel. You have until 4 December to download it yourself.

Notes Tremendous by Friðrik Walker. I am totally biased, I like the music and hearing the particular instrument being played. If pushed, I would go for Tuba Tune (C.S. Lang) and Oxford Elegy (Friðrik Walker) as my two favourite tracks.

Finally, I have been collecting quite a few episodes of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue” episodes. There is quite a few CDs of ISIHAC available.

    More next time Kelvin asks……..

One of many that is get selected on my iPod.

  4. Partial success with a partial replay. So here is another one, which I have found enlightening.

Shortly after the CD was released, a friend took me to see Ms Reader perform the Burns songs at the Pavilion Theatre. I wasn’t looking forward to it that much but she presented the songs so beautifully: it was utterly mesmerising. I’ve since purchased it for a number of friends. All have loved it.

Latest listening pleasures are a CD of two albums from the eighties by Pat Benatar (Precious Time & Get Nervous), and continuing to enjoy Elbow’s “Seldom Seen Kid”.

Totally commend the live cinema from the Met btw. I saw the Faust and it was splendid! Next one is Thais with Renee Fleming on the 20th Dec. Feel free to join me at the Falkirk cine World!

  7. It was when the announcer said, “And here come the acrobats with their bare chests” that I realised that I had been missing something.

    Yes, you did!:-)

  9. Thanks for all comments.

Gadgetvicar – the Eddi Reader concert was a surprise to me too. I expected it to be a bit smaltzy, especially with the backing of the BBC SO Strings. However, it was brilliant.

BTW – your comment had to be rescued from the spam system which is why it has just appeared. Akismet seems to have been a little overzealous recently.
