• 10 Things Gay People Still Need

Once the law changes and we have access to marriage, is that it? Will equality have been achieved? Will we suddenly have become full citizens? Will the job be done?

Here’s my run down of what we still need.

    • We need it to be impossible for the authorities to accept a plea less than murder in a suspected homophobic killing where the defendants admit killing the deceased with a hammer in his own home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-24122514. I guess that means a review of hate crime legislation at least in Northern Ireland.
    • We need to be safe when we travel – that means building on the good work that this country has done in terms of foreign policy, but a review here wouldn’t do any harm either. Oh, and trade deals do need to be linked to human rights. (Yes, LGBT rights are human rights, where have you been?)
    • We need to keep working for marriage equality. We’re getting a step towards it – a massive step towards it, but it ain’t equality and equality is what we are after, right? Interesting question for the various gay rights organisations this – will they still work towards equal marriage once this legislation has gone though. They know this is a pragmatic compromise – will they keep up the fight? – and no, I’m not talking about mixed-sex civil partnerships.
    • We need an urgent comprehensive review of all religious exemptions from legislation.
    • We need better age appropriate sex education in schools.
    • We need access to education free from prejudice.
    • We need further work done by companies and institutions on supporting gay folk at work especially in order to develop access to leadership positions where LGBT people have not found these easy to access.
    • We need appropriate representation in the media.
    • We need the Archbishop of Canterbury to commit to supporting his senior gay clergy and work to undermine the systems which keep so many of them in lacy but impeccable closets.
    • We need Hollywood to understand that we don’t all end up dead or heartbroken – Brokeback Mountain, I’m talking about you.

    Have I missed anything?

Oh suppose the sleep over! The bible readings to read – the stories to tell! The living re-tellings it would invite.

And suppose the exhaustion on Easter Day… and Monday

      Thanks Rosemary.

BTW, after you had finished polishing the eagle this morning and had gone, I discovered that we have a pelican.

The pelican has not been polished, however, Rosemary, none of us being quite that tall.

I do suspect I would like the all night vigil if we ever did it.

Where is the pelican??!! Up somewhere?? Oh, I would love to polish a pelican.

I’d love to sit up half the night reading aloud and telling stories – but I fear the exhaustion. But I would never, ever resist if invited. As long I was invited and allowed to read and tell stories. It could be so fabulous. Unique. Deep. Newsworthy. (and those are all the lures I have to throw.)

You do realise my first words are now liable to be not ‘alithos anesti’ but ‘where is the blessed pelican?’

I think that those of us who know where the Pelican is must keep our counsel and give Rosemary the pleasure of Pelican Spotting on Easter Day.

What treat could be more lovely?

Still pelican searching – it is tough on those N rather than S – if you see me with my monocular don’t laugh – oh. all right then, go on, do laugh!

Ooh, is it a Pelican in its Piety, which I gather was a popular Christ-symbol in medieval europe and also amongst the Larry Graysons?

Not only is she a Pelican in her Piety but I actually found that we have two.

I also found that it’s possible to Pelicans in their Piety right under Rosemary’s nose and she won’t necessarily see them.

Someone suggested to me a while ago that we should have an inventory of the flaura and fauna represented in the iconography of St Mary’s. I suspect such a task would be a revelation. There’s a badger, for example, which few see but me.

I am chronically unobservant – I notoriously fail to see things right under my nose. Last week I failed to see the pepper grater. It was upright on a table of less than two foot diameter. There was a table lamp, a plate and the pepper grater. I could not see it. It is sad on one whose speciality is religious architecture, isn’t it? But Low Sunday shall be find the pelican day.

Rosemary, I’d have nudged you in the right direction yesterday morning if I hadn’t rudely run off just as our conversation got to pelicans. (The pleasure of the hunt is all well and good, but it can get to the point of being an exercise in frustration.)

Thanks to all who made the singing evening such a success on Thursday. We had to bring in chairs to accommodate the people, who turned up from all local churches imaginable. Two hours of new church music later, a very happy crowd went off into the night. All credit to the local ACTS (Action for…

There is a unique event tonight in St Mary’s Cathedral. It is an ecumenically organised event showcasing some new church music both choral and congregational. Two musicians join us to animate this event, both of whom work locally and on a world stage. John Bell will be working with a scratch choir and aiding the…

A quick roundup of news on the shoe question. Eileen the Episcopali-fem has posted a glorious gallery of footwear which might, or hopefully in some cases might not, be seen in the sanctuary. Madpriest thinks it is all a question of context. Tim, over in Canada has posted a pic of the most glorious liturgical…

The news is full this morning of the story that a prominent cleric has written to the government threatening to close adoption agencies if the government proceeds with its perverse idea that everyone in the UK should be treated equally. So, unless the government does what he wants, he will take actions which will cause…
