- The UK will begin leaving the EU on 29 March 2019. It will take 10 years to leave, 10 years for it to be evident to the whole country how stupid it was and 10 years to get back in, with none of our current special measures. (Hope this prediction doesn’t come to pass but fear it will).
- The only thing to make EU-positive lefty-liberals to have pause for thought will be the EU Elections in May which will result in big gains for the so-called populist right.
- No progress towards same-sex marriage in the Church of England, despite much clearer calls for it to happen.
- Significant concerns in many UK dioceses about the cost of bishops, and particularly their spouses, attending the Lambeth Conference in 2020. (Over £5000 each).
- Elizabeth Warren / Beto O’Rourke begin to emerge as the Democratic dream ticket.
- Stricter legislation in connection with drone operators.
- Steps towards legalisation of cannabis under serious consideration within SNP.
- No referendum on Independence.
- Cyber attacks merging with terrorist attacks
- One of Scotland’s daily newspapers ceases print publication.

With out looking at a map I can think of three:
Belfast;
The Cathedral of The Isles, Millport; and
Carlisle.I am not sure if there are others, the next two which are probably further than Glasgow are Newcastle and St Mary’s Edinburgh
-
No, I don’t think so, Stewart. Partly right and partly wrong.

Greetings from Cowal & Bute.
Carlisle Cathedral must be closest to Castle Douglas.
I suspect that St German in Peel, diocese of Sodor & Man, is next closest as the seagull flies – the radio reception from the Isle of Man is extraordinarily clear down there.
Cathedral of the Isles on Great Cumbrae and Glasgow – pretty similar I would have thought, Calmac notwithstanding. Your poor horse would need waterwings to get over there, and your gaiters would have to fully waterproof.

I’ve travelled from the Isle of Man to Kirkcudbright, but in a yacht. Without the horse.

As the crow flies, I suspect that both Newcastle and Durham are closer than Glasgow. Of course, in practical terms, the Irish Sea does rather get in the way. Having spent four weeks living somewhere that is not quite so far south as Castle Douglas and yet still does not get BBC Radio Scotland, this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
St Mary’s is closer than the Cathedral of the Isles, but only by about a mile and a half.

Good Vicar, Bad Vicar
Rather a flutter in the doocot over some comments that Justin Welby made a couple of days ago in an interview on Radio 4 which is worth listening to in its entirety. The quote that has got people talking is this one: The reality is that where you have a good vicar you will find…

Predictions for 2014
Remember those people who used to say, “But what is a blog…?” Well this year you are going to be hearing them say, “But what is a mooc…?” Gay men are going to start shaving again. Now that so many straight men have bought into the idea that beards are hip, it is time to…

Review of 2013 predictions
I am wont to make predictions at new year. Here’s how I did last year. 1 – The UK will lose its triple A credit rating. Got that one right – happened within weeks. 2 – The Scottish Episcopal Church will have poor statistical returns this year prompting very quiet wailing and gnashing of teeth…
