• Who guessed the Pope would turn out to be Mrs Beamish?

It has been wonderful seeing the enthusiasm of Roman Catholic friends for the refreshing breeze that Pope Francis has been bringing to their church over the last few months.

Lots of Anglicans are hugely admiring of what he has managed to achieve.

But what’s this coming from the Vatican now?

No less than an injunction to calm it down during the Peace in the mass.

A document has emerged which suggests several different ways in which to ensure that things don’t get over exuberant. As well as discouraging people from moving from their place, it also suggests:

“changing the way in which the exchange of peace is made.” In particular it notes that “familiar and worldly gestures of greeting” should be substituted with “other, more appropriate gestures.”

Well, there’s a whole load of other Anglicans are going to be impressed by this developement, I guess.

But who guessed that the Pope would turn out to be Mrs Beamish?

With out looking at a map I can think of three:

    Belfast;
The Cathedral of The Isles, Millport; and
    Carlisle.

I am not sure if there are others, the next two which are probably further than Glasgow are Newcastle and St Mary’s Edinburgh

No, I don’t think so, Stewart. Partly right and partly wrong.

    Greetings from Cowal & Bute.

Carlisle Cathedral must be closest to Castle Douglas.

I suspect that St German in Peel, diocese of Sodor & Man, is next closest as the seagull flies – the radio reception from the Isle of Man is extraordinarily clear down there.

Cathedral of the Isles on Great Cumbrae and Glasgow – pretty similar I would have thought, Calmac notwithstanding. Your poor horse would need waterwings to get over there, and your gaiters would have to fully waterproof.

I’ve travelled from the Isle of Man to Kirkcudbright, but in a yacht. Without the horse.

As the crow flies, I suspect that both Newcastle and Durham are closer than Glasgow. Of course, in practical terms, the Irish Sea does rather get in the way. Having spent four weeks living somewhere that is not quite so far south as Castle Douglas and yet still does not get BBC Radio Scotland, this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

St Mary’s is closer than the Cathedral of the Isles, but only by about a mile and a half.

  • Pentecost

We had a great feast day at St Mary’s today. This year we focussed on the part of the Pentecost story where everyone heard the great deeds of God in their own language. So, we included four different languages in the first reading and asked everyone to pray in their own language when it came…

  • Sermon for Kimberly's Induction

I had an out of town preaching gig last night in Dunblane, where I was preaching for the induction of the Rev Kimberly Bohan as she took up her post as Rector of St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Dunblane. Blogging coverage of the service itself (from Rosemary, I think) is here. And here from Bishop…

  • New Lesbian Bishop

Looks like the world is about to welcome its first bishop in a mainstream denomination who happens to be a lesbian. There has just been an election in the Church of Sweden which has resulted in the election of Eva Brunne (who is in a registered partnership) to the Diocese of Stockholm. Congratulations to Eva.…

  • General Assembly on sex and singleness

The General Assembly has just accepted a report which says, “There has been in the church also the partial acceptance of homosexuality as an acceptable Christian lifestyle.” People have spoken of a rubicon being crossed by the support that Scott Rennie received last Saturday evening in the General Assembly. However, that is not really so.…
