• Tales of the City #9

The scene is Great Western Road, at 10 am – just after morning prayer. A street cleaner in a council jacket runs down the street hollaring at me after morning prayer

    Street Cleaner: “Oi, oi!”

I turn wondering what I’ve done.

    Self: “Um, yes?”

Street Clearner: “Was it youse that was in the paper? It was, it was youse”

I wait expecting a stream of Glasgow invective.

His eyes light up, he beams a toothless smile and responds: “Hey man, hey, that was just great.”

He’s referring to this piece in the Herald.

The cat scolds me, quite rightly, for coming in late again.Presumably she thinks that I have been out clubbing instead of going to a meeting about the church magazine.

  • New Cross

The new processional cross was delivered yesterday. It seems a long time since the last one was broken. It fell and broke in a dramatic fashion during the stripping of the altar on Maundy Thursday. This fitted in so well with the liturgy, that were it not for the cost, I’m sure I would do…

  • Fruit for Breakfast

The diet carries on. 10 lbs lost so far. Fruit for breakfast again. Despite all my efforts, it it not possible to eat all the fruit from the trees in the back garden. On of the few nice things about clerical gardens is that they are likely to have well established fruit trees in them.…

  • Sermon – 19 September 2004

For the last couple of months I have been focusing on the underlying tone of justice in the gospel readings that we have been having week by week. This morning, I want to talk about something different, but related. I want to talk about way each of us is with God. More specifically, I want…
