• International Day Against Homophobia

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia.

I’m not going to say much about it except to point towards a youtube video – one of the most articulate speeches of recent years about the topic.

It is an unlikely person speaking in an unlikely location – a drag queen called Panti Bliss speaking at the end of of a production in the Abbey Theatre in Ireland.

Lots of people will have seen it. If you haven’t, take a look.

The next time you hear a straight church leader speaking about how it is not actually homophobic to take actions which work to the detriment of gay and lesbian people remember this speech. And ask who is best placed to decide what is homophobic and what isn’t.

I seek forgiveness for my sins, William. I don’t seek forgiveness for being gay, because I don’t believe that that is a sin: I am as God made me. If a church views my sexuality as a sin, I am welcomed not as a child of God who is loved just as I am but as someone who needs God to fix her. And as the Church as a whole has a long and chequered history of believing exactly that, I see an enormous difference between a church that welcomes sinners and a church that welcomes gay folk. It’s the difference between feeling marginalised and excluded, and feeling loved and valued and included.

Just back from our diocesan clergy conference. It was just 24 hours, which was not long enough for me. Although I find myself resenting having to rearrange my diary, I know that on these occassions, the thing that matters most is meeting people and there was not quite enough time for me to feel that…

The hairdressing salon in which the praepostorial hair is trimmed has its Christmas tree up. And bedecked. Already! Harumph, harumph, harumph.

There is a report in today’s Evening News suggesting that atheists in Edinburgh are looking into the possibility of buying advertising space on Edinburgh’s buses. This is apparently following the lead of Richard Dawkins who is sponsoring such ads in London. I remember that when I was in TISEC, we had a speaker who was…
