• Deaconings and Priestings

I’m sadly unable to be in St Mary’s this weekend for one of the most significant moments in the year – five people are being ordained at a special service on Saturday afternoon.

These are moments that people remember for the whole of their lives.

My exuberant good wishes to all those being ordained. Some I don’t know terribly well and some I have known at key points on their journey. For all, pray.

For those being made deacon – may you be blessed in God’s service and you serve others.

For those being made priests – remember you were made a deacon first. It remains your foundational ministry. To it, are these blessings added – to bring God to people and people to God in ways sacramental and mysterious.

Come Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
    And lighten with celestial fire
    All those being ordained today
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
    Amen

With out looking at a map I can think of three:

    Belfast;
The Cathedral of The Isles, Millport; and
    Carlisle.

I am not sure if there are others, the next two which are probably further than Glasgow are Newcastle and St Mary’s Edinburgh

No, I don’t think so, Stewart. Partly right and partly wrong.

    Greetings from Cowal & Bute.

Carlisle Cathedral must be closest to Castle Douglas.

I suspect that St German in Peel, diocese of Sodor & Man, is next closest as the seagull flies – the radio reception from the Isle of Man is extraordinarily clear down there.

Cathedral of the Isles on Great Cumbrae and Glasgow – pretty similar I would have thought, Calmac notwithstanding. Your poor horse would need waterwings to get over there, and your gaiters would have to fully waterproof.

I’ve travelled from the Isle of Man to Kirkcudbright, but in a yacht. Without the horse.

As the crow flies, I suspect that both Newcastle and Durham are closer than Glasgow. Of course, in practical terms, the Irish Sea does rather get in the way. Having spent four weeks living somewhere that is not quite so far south as Castle Douglas and yet still does not get BBC Radio Scotland, this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

St Mary’s is closer than the Cathedral of the Isles, but only by about a mile and a half.

The thing about blogging is that most people still don't understand its power yet. It is power sufficient to make new networks or break a traditional organisation. The church that I work in has always been an early adopter of technology – electic light, organ etc all arrived here before they arrived anywhere else. Predictably,…

  • Sermon – 23 May 2004

This morning I am going to concentrate on the first reading ? a snapshot in the life of Paul, on his travels with Silas. A snatched glance at what life was like for them as they preached the Gospel far from home. They freed a slave girl from the things which imprisoned her. The freed…

The pack of papers for the General Synod have arrived and I have spent a couple of hours reading them all through and trying to work out what the motions are all about. I had thought that we were going to get a light year at the synod, however there are already 54 substantive motions…
